Wolves: Lage could suffer 'massive shock' over £42m star at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Bruno Lage would be ‘shocked’ if he were to lose midfielder Matheus Nunes in any imminent transfer window, having only brought the 23-year-old to Molineux in the summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Nunes was part of a recruitment spree that saw Wolves splash more than £120 million as they looked to fight their way up the Premier League table.

Wolves completed the signing of the eight-cap Portugal international in August, with the midfielder penning a five-year deal after a club-record £42 million fee was agreed with Sporting Lisbon.

Liverpool were also strongly linked with Nunes throughout the summer but it was the West Midlands side who won the race.

After his arrival, Nunes insisted that he wanted to join Wolves for a ‘long time’ and said he was ‘very excited’ about the deal getting done.

Club chairman Jeff Shi described Lage’s new recruit as ‘another exciting young talent’ and one of the brightest prospects in world football.

Lage has started Nunes in every game since his arrival and he provided an assist for Daniel Podence’s goal against Southampton that earned Wolves their first win of the season.

However, it is now understood that Liverpool could yet reignite their interest in Nunes if they fail in their pursuit to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.

O’Rourke believes that it would come as a surprise if Wolves were to lose their record signing so soon after his arrival.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’d be a massive shock for Bruno Lage if they were to lose him so early after just signing him from Sporting Lisbon. He will be hoping to at least keep Nunes for one season after his big-money arrival from Sporting Lisbon. Wolves did very well to sign him in the summer
