Wolves: Europa League winning manager 'would be big coup' at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers would pull off a ‘real coup’ if they were to appoint Julen Lopetegui as their new manager, following the sacking of Bruno Lage, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

After the West Midlands outfit were beaten 2-0 by West Ham on Saturday evening, chairman Jeff Shi chose to end Lage’s spell at Molineux.

In the wake of Lage’s sacking, Wolves had made Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim their top target, only for the 37-year-old to snub their approach, according to The Sun.

The report states that he is reluctant to walk away from his current Champions League exploits with the Portuguese giants.

However, the Telegraph has since reported that Sevilla boss Lopetegui is the preferred option to step into the dugout at Molineux.

They add that the Spaniard was close to being made the club’s manager following Fosun’s takeover in 2016.

Wolves received a boost in their pursuit of the 56-year-old after Sevilla chose to sack him on Wednesday night, with the club sat just one point clear of the La Liga relegation zone after seven matches.

O’Rourke believes Lopetegui would represent a big coup for Wolves if they can complete a deal to bring him to the club.

The journalist adds that the manager’s pedigree on the international stage makes him a potentially exciting appointment.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’d be a big coup if Wolves were able to get someone like Lopetegui who, up until recently, was regarded as one of the best coaches in European football. He’s managed some top clubs, he’s won European competitions as well and he’s managed the Spain national team.”
