Why Wayne Rooney pointed to former Manchester United teammate in furious post-match interview

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is taking inspiration from Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough following a poor start to his Birmingham City tenure.

Rooney arrived at Birmingham earlier this month to replace John Eustace who was controversially replaced while the Blues were in the Championship play-offs. The former D.C. United manager's start to life at St Andrew's has been underwhelming.

Rooney has lost all of his first three games in charge including a defeat to Southampton on Saturday. Following the loss to Hull City in midweek, the 38-year-old was booed off the pitch by disgruntled supporters.

Rooney has faced questions about the pressure he is already under. However, the former striker insists he is not concerned and is using Carrick as his inspiration.

"Listen, and I’m sick of going on about all the time; we’re trying to build," a disgruntled Rooney told Sky Sports after the loss to the Saints. "We’re trying to move forward with this club. We’ve been here just over two weeks, and that is going to take time, there’s no doubt about that.

"The players are not used to doing what we’re doing, we adapted today a bit, we do need time, it was a little bit better. It takes time to make steps but also I’m fully aware we need to pick up points.

"We’re getting there. We are in a transition period, we’re trying to get it right - that will happen.

"There’s always pressure. It’s the Championship, it is what it is. It’s a long season. Michael Carrick lost his first five games or something like that, he had a full pre-season with the team.
