Why Manchester United sent a letter of appreciation to Copenhagen

Manchester United sent a letter of appreciation to FC Copenhagen to thank their club for paying their respects to Sir Bobby Charlton when they visited Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Charlton passed away on October 21 and the football world was left in mourning following the announcement of his death.

The legendary Charlton scored 249 goals in 758 games for United and is the second-highest goalscorer in the club's history after Wayne Rooney.

He is also one of just nine players to win the World Cup, the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or in the game's entire history.

Copenhagen laid flowers for Sir Bobby when they visited Old Trafford last month, the first game that saw pre-planned tributes after his passing, and their fans also paid respects.

United's CEO Richard Arnold sent a letter of appreciation to Copenhagen after that game and it read: "Dear Allan, on behalf of everyone at Manchester United I would like to thank yourself, your fellow directors, players, staff and fans for the way you paid your respects to Sir Bobby Charlton last night.

"The European Cup was a special competition for Sir Bobby defining not just his football career but also his life. He was a winner as a player in 1968 and then was a director when we lifted the trophy in 1999 and again in 2008,

"Sir Bobby was also the last surviving member of the Munich Air Disaster as the team known as the 'Busby Babes' returned from European Cup quarter-final success in Belgrade.

"As you all recognised it was an emotional evening where the football family came together to honour one of our greatest ever players and everyone
