Sir Bobby Charlton memorial service updates as city says farewell to Manchester United legend

Manchester will say goodbye to one of its most beloved adopted sons on Monday as a memorial service is held in honour of Sir Bobby Charlton.

The Manchester United icon died at the age of 86 on October 21 and will be laid to rest on Monday. A private funeral service will be held at Manchester Cathedral at 2pm and the ceremony will celebrate the life and incredible legacy of not only an England and United legend, but a husband, father and grandfather as well.

The procession to the cathedral will pass by Old Trafford and the Trinity statue for a final farewell and fans will have the opportunity to line the streets and say goodbye. Charlton made 758 appearances for United and won the European Cup in 1968 as well as the World Cup with England in 1966.

A big turnout is expected at Old Trafford but if you can't make it you can follow our blog for live updates throughout the day.

A big crowd is expected outside Old Trafford to watch as the funeral procession passes. There will be a guard of honour made up of United Academy players.

That is due to happen at around 1.30pm, but fans are already beginning to gather outside the East Stand and near the Trinity statue.

After leaving Old Trafford, the procession will then travel into the city centre to Manchester Cathedral, where a private funeral service will be held from about 2pm.

Around 1,000 people are due to attend the service, including many of United's greatest names, and also world football figures. Manchester City will be represented by club chief executive Ferran Soriano.

Some of the names on the guestlist can be seen on the tweet below from our chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs are among
