Where Leicester City can 'take no risks' in transfer window as wait for key appointment goes on

A transfer target’s character is as important as their technical qualities, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has said as the club line up their summer business without a head of recruitment in place.

City can “take no risks” with potential signings’ personalities this transfer window, when they plan an overhaul of the squad, and ensuring they have the aggression to fit in with Rodgers’ style of play will be a key aspect of the scouting process. The manager has said it scares him when he finds players that don’t run.

Right now, Rodgers and director of football Jon Rudkin, as well as members of the technical scouting team, are having to take on greater responsibility with the club’s summer business following the departure of head of recruitment Lee Congerton to Atalanta. City have lined up Southampton’s Martyn Glover as his replacement, but he has not yet made the switch.

Rodgers said: “We’ve got other staff in the recruitment team who are filling in and doing a great job. It brings more responsibility to Jon and myself to look at that. The work has never scared us. Thankfully here, we know the market we’re working and looking in.

“The guys behind the scenes are doing a fantastic job in terms of identifying the types of players we want to bring in here. In terms of negotiations and contracts, Jon takes care of that. Until there is someone who is appointed, that is something the club will look after very well.”

He added: “There will never be a player that will come in if I didn’t think he would suit how we work. Clearly players come in for different reasons but in the main I’ll always have an opinion. I would never say I would have a final decision because the club is much more than myself.
