Sheffield Wednesday 21/22 player ratings as Barry Bannan stars but Lewis Wing and Sylla Sow flop
There was no fairy-tale ending for Sheffield Wednesday after a rollercoaster 2021/22 season. Darren Moore's men lost 2-1 to Sunderland in a two-legged play-off semi-final as they missed out on an instant return to the Championship.
As an emotional Moore admitted in his post-match debrief, the Black Cats tie proved a "bridge too far" for his side. A second successive year in the third tier awaits.
Nonetheless, it was a memorable ride full of plenty of thrills and spills. They scored goals galore at fortress Hillsborough to finish fourth in the division.
Moore has laid a solid foundation heading into the summer. The majority of his signings in the past two transfer windows have proven to be big hits rather than misses.
Here are the Owls player ratings for the season for those who started a minimum of five matches.
After a strong start to his Wednesday career, Peacock-Farrell came in for heavy criticism after a number of high-profile errors between September and October. Got through that sticky patch and produced a series of excellent performances. A fine shot-stopper, Peacock-Farrell recorded 17 clean sheets in 48 appearances across all competitions. Looks unlikely he will return to S6 next year.
Four of his eight starts came in the cup competitions. Wildsmith chalked up three clean sheets and delivered a man-of-the-match display in the victory over Harrogate Town in the Papa John's Trophy. However, Wildsmith did not cover himself in glory for a couple of the goals leaked against Plymouth Argyle and Hartlepool United. His last competitive outing came against Hartlepool on December 1. Will probably leave at the end of his contract.
