What Newcastle star said about Manchester United should set alarm bells ringing for Ruben Amorim
Newcastle defender Dan Burn didn't beat about the bush in his post-match interview following his side's win over Manchester United, though it's always easier to be candid when your team has just won 4-1.
His admission that he's "not a massive fan of Man United" won't inflict too many sleepless nights on anyone associated with the club, but what he said shortly after that should be of concern to Ruben Amorim.
"They (United) went long quite a lot in the first half but they didn’t get a lot of joy out of it," he told Premier League Productions. "We knew we’d be able to force a few mistakes and the lads were clinical today."
It's tough enough being told by an opposition player that they knew the tactic being deployed wouldn't work, but the bigger issue for United is that they didn't have any other option.
By his own admission, Joshua Zirkzee isn't a centre forward, let alone a target man capable of winning long balls and holding off centre backs while bringing others into play.
But United's long-ball strategy was a tactic deployed out of necessity rather than an ill-judged belief it could reap rewards.
United are already struggling to play out from the back and Newcastle's intense press meant Amorim was forced to choose between ceding possession to Newcastle in a dangerous area or punting it long and giving themselves the opportunity to regroup ahead of another wave of attack.
When you're struggling to build from the back and you don't have a centre forward capable of winning aerial duels and relieving the pressure on his teammates - and this is by no means a dig at Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund was equally hopeless up against Fabian Schar and Burn - then what other options do you have?
