Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell on a big game at Isthmian Premier relegation rivals Cray Valley and their 2-0 weekend defeat at league leaders Folkestone Invicta
Ryan Maxwell says Welling can’t get wrapped up in the size of their match against relegation rivals Cray Valley.
The sides meet tonight in a bottom-four Isthmian Premier clash at the Artic Stadium, with both needing points.
Visitors Welling are second-bottom, six points from safety, after losing 2-0 at leaders Folkestone on Saturday, while the Millers are in the bottom four on goal difference following a 3-3 home draw against Cheshunt.
With Wingate & Finchley also in action, hosting Potters Bar, defeat could see the Wings end the night as many as eight points from safety.
So they could do with a result against Steve McKimm’s side, who went so close to successive promotions last season by reaching the play-off semi-finals.
“We know how big a game it is but every game is a big game,” said Welling manager Maxwell.
“Folkestone was a no-pressure game to win but every team we play, we should be looking to get points off of now, it’s as simple as that.
“Everybody’s beatable and this is a big week for us.
“Cray aren’t the only team in this dogfight and neither are we.
“There’s a number of teams in it, we have to focus on us and the job at hand.
“That means Tuesday night is a big game, yes, but we can’t get wrapped up in the size of the game.
“You don’t get six points, you get three, so although it is a big game, it’s just three points.”
Maxwell and Millers boss McKimm have been friends for years and have met plenty of times over their managerial careers.
The most recent meeting came earlier this season when Maxwell, then manager of Sittingbourne, led the Brickies to a 2-1 FA Trophy victory.
“I get on very well with Macca, he’s one of the guys I class as a friend in non-league football,” said Maxwell.
