Weather and travel LIVE updates as major road shut, schools close and warning in place in Greater Manchester

Temperatures plummeted again in Greater Manchester as the cold snap continues this week. Brits were braced for the coldest night of winter so far overnight - and temperatures are set to drop again later today (January 9).

A yellow Met Office weather warning for snow and ice is in force across parts of the North West until 11am today, including Wigan. Greater Manchester is waking up to temperatures around -3C this morning, with misty conditions across much of the region.

The A555 Manchester Airport relief road remains shut following the recent flooding and icy weather. Other roads are reportedly hit by difficult conditions, including the A57 Snake Pass and other smaller roads.

Travel disruption is expected throughout the day and school closures could be announced. St Anthony's Catholic Primary School, in Wythenshawe, announced on Wednesday it would remain closed today amid ongoing heating issues in the cold snap.

Drivers, pedestrians and public transport users are all urged to take care. A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester said: "With the weather forecast showing sub-zero temperatures across Greater Manchester and elsewhere over the coming days, we’re encouraging everyone to plan ahead, check before you travel and take extra care.

"Roads and pavements could be icy, making driving conditions difficult and impacting journey times. There may also be some disruption to public transport services. Our hard-working staff are continuing do everything they can to minimise disruption across the public transport network, while also working alongside partners to ensure platforms at tram stops, interchanges and the roads are gritted."
