'We wanted to do something disruptive' - Adidas explain new Manchester United away kit

Adidas have revealed the inspiration behind Manchester United's new away kit, with the architecture of the city playing a role in the design.

United officially unveiled the new kit on Monday. The base colour of the shirt is green with white stripes and maroon lines ensuring United will boast one of the most eye-catching shirts in this season's Premier League.

Designers Adidas have now explained the thought process behind the eccentric design, with product marketeer Christiaan Barnard revealing that both the history of the club and the city played a role.

"I think the big take-out from this season's away kit that people need to understand is that Manchester United have a big legacy with stripes and we want to revisit that," he told United's official website. "There is a couple of times and I invite anybody to do the research and look into our past to see that we've done striped shirts.

"It's quite famous in the period between 1909 and 1930 we had a variety of different stripes. So this is something that I was quite educated on by Inigo (Turner) - who's from Manchester and also a huge United fan - is the connection between casual wear within Manchester and also just stripes in general.

"To be honest, I think as much as United's home shirt is all about the DNA of the club, I think this [the away shirt] is the DNA of both the club and the city, but really in a modern interpretation."
