'We meant no malice': City of Joburg apologise to Kaizer Chiefs for Twitter gaffe
The City of Johannesburg released a brief statement apologising to Kaizer Chiefs following a Twitter gaffe on the social media platform on Tuesday.
Amakhosi claimed bragging rights on Saturday against rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby via a sensational Yusuf Maart long-range goal in the 73rd minute.
Since then, fans have continued to enjoy the back-and-forth banter between the two sets of supporters.
But in an attempt to make people aware of litter and ensuring that they use dustbins, the official Twitter account City of Johannesburg went the extra mile when they entered the fray.
The account posted a picture of an Amakhosi jersey visibly in the dustbin.
But what you said wasn't a lie ??????. pic.twitter.com/uVilIZloAv
Twitter then erupted with thousands getting involved, including Amakhosi sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr, saying: "Disgusting".
Disgusting
Soon after, the City of Johannesburg deleted the tweet, but it was too little too late, as the damage was already done.
Hours later, an apology was eventually released by the municipality.
We sincerely apologise to @KaizerChiefs for the insensitive tweet posted earlier today. We meant no malice and the intended message was diluted with the choice of the meme that was used. We respect the Kaizer Chiefs brand and we congratulate them for winning the Derby ???
