Cristiano Ronaldo fails to keep promise as Al Nassr crash out of Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty skills couldn't save Al Nassr from being knocked out of the Asian Champions League quarter-finals. After losing to Al Ain in last week's first leg, Ronaldo's team fell 2-0 down on the night and had looked set for a tough exit in Monday night's exciting second leg in a game packed with drama.

Al Nassr managed to then score two goals through Abdulrahman Ghareeb and a Khalid Eisa own-goal before Ronaldo, aged 39, somehow contrived to miss a tap-in just after the hour. Luckily, ex-Manchester United player Alex Telles scored in the 72nd minute to take the game into extra time.

Al-Nassr then had a player sent off and fell behind again when Sultan Al-Shamsi scored for Al Ain. But Ronaldo made up for his earlier miss by scoring a penalty with two minutes left, making it 4-4 overall and taking the thrilling encounter to a penalty shootout.

Ronaldo scored in the penalty shootout but his Al Nassr teammates didn't manage any other goals, losing 3-1.

The former Manchester United man had promised in an Instagram post ahead of kick-off that he was 'ready' to help his side go through despite their first-leg defeat. In a post on Sunday, the Portugal national team's all-time leading goalscorer wrote: "Ready to turn this around. Insha’Allah," alongside a fistbump emoji.

But Al Nassr's failure to ultimately do so means Ronaldo has been unable to keep his promise as his side crashed out of Asia's premier continental competition.
