Watch Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis get emotional as he receives award from his grandfather

Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis welled up after being recognised in his hometown for sporting excellence – with his grandfather handing over the award.

The Greek international has established himself as a fan favourite since arriving in Glasgow 12 months ago after playing a crucial role in Ange Postecoglou's side regaining the Premiership title. Giakoumakis scored 17 goals in his debut season in Scottish football and it seems his excellent displays have not gone unnoticed in his homeland.

The 27-year-old has been back in Greece this month representing his country in the Nations League, scoring in the recent 2-0 victory over Kosovo, and he had time to return to his hometown of Irakleio to receive recognition for his career achievements so far.

The imposing striker has terrified defences across the country and is well known for his robust challenges and tough attitude, but as his proud grandad approached, he was almost reduced to tears, and quickly buried his head as the pair embraced.

As the crowd applauded, Giakoumakis is clearly beaming with pride, and it's not likely to be a moment he'll forget in a hurry.

Giakoumakis will soon be returning to Glasgow for his side's title defence, which kicks off on July 31 against Aberdeen, before a crack at European football's elite in the Champions League group stages.
