Wakefield Trinity close in on Hull FC fullback in boost to survival hopes

Wakefield Trinity are in the driving seat to land Jamie Shaul for the remainder of the season. Rugby League Live understands the Super League strugglers are the club currently in the box seat for the fullback with the West Yorkshire club closing in on a deal that will see the Hull FC man arrive for the remainder of the season.

The Black and Whites have been keen to find Shaul a new opportunity for the remainder of the year after falling out of favour at the MKM Stadium. He hasn't featured since the heavy defeat to Leeds Rhinos and since then, Jack Walker has been drafted in on loan and Jake Connor has returned to fitness.

With opportunities limited, Wakefield have made a move to land the 30-year-old and look set to overcome competition to secure his arrival. Both Featherstone Rovers and Castleford Tigers have also reportedly shown interest in the two-time Challenge Cup winner.

But Wakefield appear set to land the deal as they urgently try to turn around their fortunes. Trinity are currently bottom of Super League and at serious risk relegation with just eight games of the season remaining. They host Super League champions St Helens this weekend. All being well, Shaul will be cleared to feature in the contest against Kristian Woolf's side.

His arrival would be a timely boost with first-choice fullback Max Jowitt set for a number of weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring strain. Willie Poching was dealt another blow this week when Jay Pitts was ruled out for the season. Wakefield have been active in the market ahead of the transfer deadline, drafting in Jorge Taufua from Manly Sea Eagles and another Hull FC player in the shape of prop Josh Bowden.
