Vaclav Cerny sends Rangers fans into overdrive as he itches to prove Ajax legend right years after Celtic winner

In-demand Vaclav Cerny has sent Rangers transfer sleuths into overdrive as the winger aims to come good on a prophecy about his ability.

The Czech Republic winger follows Philippe Clement's side on social media as speculation gathered pace over his future at Wolfsburg with a belief he could be set for the exit door with the Bundesliga side. The wide man earned the switch to Germany on the back of a thrilling season with Twente. Rangers transfer guru Nils Koppen knows Cerny well during his 11 seasons in the Netherlands.

Cerny - who has 17 caps for Czech Republic and has scored six goals - is a familiar face to Celtic fans as he scored the winner for Ajax which sickened them back in 2015 when he was a prodigious 18-year-old who was being tipped to become Ajax's next superstar winger. And club legend Marc Overmars predicted Cerny had traits which exceeded his own ability as one of the best wide men of his era. Overmars said: "Shortly after I took up my position in Ajax my colleagues recommended I have a look at one player. It was Václav. I needed only two minutes to understand why they wanted me to do that. You can recognise talent at the first sight. I cannot compare us, maybe I was a bit faster but Vašek is definitely more skilful.

“As a boy he was outstanding and won a lot of individual prizes. He is a very effective footballer with creative ideas. He has opted for a career outside his country and decided to play in the Ajax academy. Now there’s a very important step in front of him, he has to adapt and settle in senior football. This transition is not easy and we’ll see how he manages. There’s no doubt he’s an interesting and talented player."
