Vaclav Cerny HASN'T guaranteed Rangers Champions League start as Philippe Clement urges caution

Philippe Clement hailed Rangers new boy Vaclav Cerny after his wonder goal against Motherwell at Hampden.

And he’s told supporters there’s plenty more to come from the Czech winger. But ahead of Gers’ Champions League crunch tie against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday night, Clement says he’s yet to decide whether to start the on-loan Wolfsburg ace. Cerny was terrific for 55 minutes against the Steelmen as Rangers secured a narrow 2-1 Premiership victory. Clement is wrapping the wide man in cotton wool as he battles for full fitness - but admits Cerny will be a key player for the club this term.

After the win over Well, the manager said: “That’s why we bought Vaclav - not only his goal but his combination play, his assist and also his defensive work. He’s an experienced player who can help the team a lot in the way we want to play. So it’s really positive for him today and he scored a good goal - but that’s what we expected from him.

“That’s why we put in a lot of effort to get him here. And of course, there’s more to come from him. I had to take him off after 55 minutes. Physically, he has to take more steps after a four week holiday. But we are a club who is competing in the league and Europe.

“For him, it’s about being fresh every minute. Today it was 55. Is he ready to start on Tuesday? That’s a good question. I have to see on Sunday how he reacts and I’ll speak with him.

“I can’t make decisions just for Tuesday. It would be crazy just to think about Tuesday and then have a player out for a long time. I can only make the decision in the next couple of days, not now. I have an idea in my head but I need to be ready to adapt, like I’ve been doing for eight months here already.”
