UEFA hand down Galatasaray punishments after Manchester United Champions League match

UEFA have slapped Galatasaray with a €51,500 fine and handed their supporters a suspended ban from a European away game after their behaviour at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

The Turkish giants completed a shock 3-2 success earlier this month to put United's hopes of reaching the knockout stages in peril and it also transpired that thousands of Galatasaray fans had got tickets in the home ends.

But UEFA's investigation focused on breaches from the away end and found the club were guilty on four separate counts from the fixture on October 3.

They were fined €30,000 for the throwing of objects and also handed a one-match ban for away supporters, suspended for two years, for the same offence.

There was a €3,500 fine for the lighting of fireworks and a €10,000 fine for general crowd disturbances. They were also fined €8,000 for acts of damage in the away end at Old Trafford and also ordered to pay United a settlement for the damages caused by their supporters.

United have since investigated how so many Galatasaray fans managed to buy tickets for the home end and found that many had been purchased via bots and resold by touts or resale websites, while some also bought hospitality packages for the game.

In a statement to supporters, the club said: "Clearly, having away fans in our home areas is not something we want at Old Trafford, and we understand and acknowledge that some fans felt unsafe and concerned about potential trouble. The safety of our fans and our staff is always our number one priority.

"We pride ourselves on having an incredibly safe stadium to visit.
