LIVE updates as drivers urged to avoid M66 following incident

Police and firefighters are dealing with an incident on the M66 tonight (Saturday, August 9). The nature of the incident is not yet clear, but National Highways and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) bosses have posted about disruption on the motorway.

The incident is on the northbound stretch between junctions two and three. GMFRS posted on X: "Our crews are currently working alongside Greater Manchester Police at an incident on the M66 northbound between junctions 3 and 2. Please avoid the area."

Nation Highways north west posted: "The M66 is closed northbound between J4 (M62) and J3 Pilsworth near Bury. This is due to an ongoing Greater Manchester Police incident. National Highways officers are assisting with traffic management. Updates will be passed as we get them from."
