Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne tips FA Trophy conquerors Worthing to take National League South title

Tonbridge manager Alan Dunne tipped Worthing to win National League South after witnessing their quality up close in the FA Trophy.

A magnificent Rebels display was rewarded with a 4-0 win in Saturday’s second-round tie, thanks to goals from Nathan Odokonyero (2), Kwaku Frimpong and Brad Dolaghan.

Angels barely touched the ball at times as Adam Hinshelwood’s side showed the class that’s sent them up to third place in the league on the back of six successive wins.

They enjoyed themselves on Tonbridge’s big Longmead pitch in a dominant display.

“I’m disappointed not to win but they’re a team that I feel will probably go on and win the league this season,” said Dunne.

“I spent three days watching Worthing and I don’t think any team in the last six have managed to put a glove near them.

“Hinshelwood, I’ve known him for a long time, he’s a top coach and they only got stronger as the game went on.

“Teams in this league have tried to press them, they’ve tried to sit back and no one can get near them, they’ve got too much for them.

“My boys struggled tonight. Saying that, we gifted them the first goal with a mistake and again we had a couple of chances, but I want my boys to take some learning from it.

“They’re a top team that spend every day together with the ball, they’ve got players from Brighton.

“Just the gap in the gulf is too far for us, especially tonight.”

Dunne felt Tonbridge were feeling the effects of their 1-1 midweek National League South draw at Bath, arriving home in the early hours after an energy-sapping effort.
