Ryan Maxwell described Welling’s first points in eight games as a great footballing day.
The Wings ended a run of seven successive Isthmian Premier defeats with a 3-1 win over Cheshunt on Saturday.
It came in new boss Maxwell’s third league match in charge, following defeats by Billericay and Chatham, and was achieved courtesy of goals for debutants Sonny Black and Troy Howard, plus a clincher from Femi Akinwande.
The Wings remain eight points from safety but the result lifted everyone at Park View Road.
“You could see from the passion, it was quite evident the club have been desperate for a win,” said Maxwell, who takes Welling to Ramsgate in the Velocity Cup fourth round tonight.
“All the boys that have been here since the start, particularly, they’ve gone through their own journey.
“Ours has been short so far but they’ve had to endure a real tough period, so I felt relieved for them and pleased for them, and, of course, the fans.
“It was great at full-time, there was a great vibe in the bar afterwards, too - it was a great footballing day.”
Maxwell has tried to take the pressure off the players he inherited during his first couple of weeks at the club.
Of those still in the team, defender Lekan Majoyegbe, a summer signing from Sheppey, was outstanding in the win over Cheshunt.
The big centre-half produced a dominant display with the type of performance the Wings will need if they are to get out of trouble and avoid back-to-back relegations.
Maxwell said: “The players have had a lot of weight on their shoulders, so I want to relieve that and let them feel a bit happier about playing football, and then they can show what they can do.
