Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne’s verdict on 2-1 FA Cup second qualifying round win over Ramsgate

The result mattered most for Alan Dunne as Tonbridge edged lower-league Ramsgate in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Angels had to work hard against their Isthmian Premier visitors who played just over half the match with 10 men after centre-back Raphe Brown was sent off.

But the National League South side came from a goal down to win 2-1 as Jephte Tanga cancelled out Alfie Paxman’s penalty and substitute Bunmi Babajide scored an 84th-minute winner.

Bailey Akehurst missed a penalty for Tonbridge at 1-1 after Brown was adjudged to have brought down Frankie Baker and received his second booking.

“It was by no means an FA Cup classic but we watched them Tuesday (2-0 league win v Maldon & Tiptree), we’ve watched them three or four times and they’re a really difficult side,” said Tonbridge manager Dunne.

“Their front four are real good players and we knew it would be a tough game, so we prepped for that.

“The sending-off happened quite early, which makes it even harder sometimes to break down 10 men, as they weren’t as open as they were at the start.

“It was a difficult game for us, a sticky game, patchy at times. It probably wasn’t a great performance but in cup football it’s not about the performance, it’s more about the result.”

Ramsgate were organised and disciplined in their shape while a man down and were six minutes away from a midweek replay at Southwood.

But they were finally broken down as substitute Babajide, just back from a groin injury, finished Tanga’s cross to secure a place in the third qualifying round.

“They’re going to sit back in a 4-1-1, so we’re going to have to be patient at times and try and get on it and move the ball and shift it and try and move their units,” said Dunne.
