Tonbridge Angels 0 Torquay United 1 match report: Second-half Matt Worthington goal settles FA Cup third qualifying round tie at Longmead
Tonbridge lost to Torquay at Longmead for the second time this season to bow out of the FA Cup.
Angels, beaten 2-1 when the sides met in National League South at the start of August, went down to a second-half Matt Worthington goal in the third qualifying round.
The hosts were comfortably the better side in the first half but couldn’t make their dominance count and were punished by a ruthless Gulls side, who buried their first genuine chance.
Alan Dunne made two changes to the team edged by Ebbsfleet last weekend, with Bunmi Babajide and Hayden Bullas replacing Frankie Baker and Jaden Brown.
Gulls boss Jimmy Ball speculated in his pre-match press conference that Angels, not wanting a Tuesday night replay in Devon, may be more open than they would in a league game.
They were certainly the side making most of the running in a goalless first half, showing far more ambition than their big-name visitors and carving out a couple of very good chances, as well as forcing a series of corners.
The best of them fell to Lamar Reynolds who, when released by a lovely Ricky Korboa pass, saw his shot touched on to the bar and out for a corner by Gulls keeper Toby Savin.
Reynolds may feel he should have scored but Savin deserved credit for the stop.
Moments later, Reynolds fired over from a Jephte Tanga cut-back when well-placed, while his honesty perhaps cost him when he stayed on his feet after being tugged back by last-man Luke Brown.
He shouldn’t have needed to go down to get the foul but Torquay certainly got away with one there.
Angels popped the ball about well and produced some lovely approach play but just couldn’t break the deadlock.
