Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell on taking the Wings to the top of the Isthmian Premier
Ryan Maxwell wants Welling to enjoy being top of the Isthmian Premier - but says they mustn’t forget where they came from.
Maxwell’s side hit the summit for the first time this season thanks to Nahum Melvin-Lambert’s goal in a 1-0 home win over AFC Whyteleafe on Saturday.
They moved above Dartford, who were in FA Cup action, on goal difference, while Carshalton missed the chance to leapfrog Maxwell’s side last night.
Welling visit Maldon & Tiptree tonight, followed by a trip to Eastbourne Borough this weekend.
The Wings have come a long way, having been in the bottom four before Maxwell’s appointment almost a year ago transformed their fortunes.
After securing safety with an impressive late-season run, they’re competing at the other end of the table.
“It’s a small milestone to be top, but I think everyone’s got to keep relativity at the football club,” said Maxwell.
“Enjoy where we are and don’t forget where we came from because it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and you forget how hard we’ve had to work to turn things around, which is human nature.
“Ultimately, you have to be very aware of the progression because it’s nothing but positive when you look back.
“This time last season the club were probably bottom of the league. It’s a lovely little moment we’re in.”
Maxwell has praised Welling fans for sticking by the club in difficult times over recent seasons, including relegation to Step 3.
He appreciates their support and hopes to reward them by maintaining a promotion challenge.
“Some of the hardcore fans were very keen to express their gratitude in the bar after the game on Saturday, and that was very nice to hear,” said Maxwell.
“Some of these fans, we’re talking about 20 years of loyalty, or more, maybe 30-35
