Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne says his side dismantled Torquay United despite 1-0 FA Cup third qualifying round defeat
Alan Dunne felt Tonbridge’s performance in their FA Cup defeat by Torquay was the best in his time as manager.
Dunne said Angels “dismantled” United in Saturday’s third qualifying round tie at Longmead but they lost 1-0 to a second-half Matt Worthington strike.
It was a tough result to take for boss Dunne, who saw the hosts create several good chances in a dominant first-half display before conceding the only goal 10 minutes after the break.
“That was probably our best performance of the season, probably the best performance since I’ve been here,” said Dunne, who took charge at Longmead just over a year ago.
“We looked like men. The way we played, the patterns, the way we popped it about, they couldn’t get near us.
“We just saw a bit of a nosebleed in front of goal a couple of times, which is the disappointing thing, but take nothing away tactically.
“We got it spot on as a team. The players did everything right.
“Goals change games and I think over the course of the 90 minutes, if you look at the stats, you think, how did we get beat?”
Torquay goalkeeper Toby Savin made a number of good saves to frustrate the Angels attack, denying Lamar Reynolds and Ricky Korboa at 0-0 and keeping out an injury-time Miller McDonald strike.
“The keeper’s made some big saves in the right moments but we had enough balls in the box and set-pieces,” said Dunne.
“I’m just disappointed for the boys in there because we were outstanding.
“We dismantled them but they got their goal and fair play to them - they’re in the next round.
“In cup football, you get nothing for playing well. It’s about results. Good luck to them. They got their one goal from their one chance.
“I said to the boys in there, with how hard you worked and how hard you worked
