Todd Cantwell waves Celtic white flag as false Rangers prophecy gives Callum McGregor the last laugh

At the end of last season Todd Cantwell had his sights set on matching Callum McGregor's trophy haul - but the wantaway Rangers star now appears to have conceded to defeat to his Celtic foe.

Following defeat to Birmingham, boss Philippe Clement revealed that the playmaker has handed in a transfer request as he looks to become another big name heading for the exit door. But just a few months ago it appeared that he was planning to be at Ibrox long-term as he looked to claim McGregor's serial winner crown and take it across the city.

The pair were involved in a post-match scuffle following the 3-3 Old Firm thriller in April - which left Rangers sitting at the Scottish Premiership summit going into the crucial title run-in - having exchanged words on-field following Cantwell's introduction to the game. By the end of the month, the Light Blues' man was feeling bullish.

With the league title fight between the Glasgow giants going all the way and the Scottish Cup final just around the corner, the 26-year-old proclaimed he wanted to win even more trophies than the Hoop's skipper. At the time, McGregor had won 20 trophies at Celtic whereas Cantwell had lifted a sole Viaplay Cup triumph to his name.

But undeterred, Cantwell reflected on the feud with his derby day sparring partner stating: "There's a rivalry there, right? Listen, there are things which are said on the pitch and things which are said off the pitch.

"And, as a player, I think you should respect. I want to win probably just as much as he (McGregor) does, probably a little bit more, to be honest, because he has been up here a long time. It's a rivalry, it's a competition. Both teams want to win, both teams need to win. It stops there, that's all it is."
