Three stand-out Plymouth Argyle players from pre-season defeat by Bristol City

Plymouth Argyle were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City in their latest pre-season game at Home Park, drawing a blank against the Championship visitors despite creating a number of good chances.

That inability to capitalise on scoring opportunities was the main frustration to come out of the match from a Pilgrims' perspective, but there were a number of positives for manager Steven Schumacher to take as well.

With the 2022/23 EFL season now only two weeks away, Schumacher's squad is really starting to take shape. He has brought in four summer signings - Matt Butcher and Mickel Miller on permanent deals, and Finn Azaz and Bali Mumba on season-long loans from Aston Villa and Norwich City respectively.

In addition, injured players have either returned to action - as in the case of Panutche Camara and Brendan Galloway against City - or soon will, with Conor Grant not far away from making his comeback after a groin operation.

Schumacher used 10 substitutes against the Robins, with Camara and Galloway among them, while Mumba made his first appearance for his new club after replacing Joe Edwards at right wing-back from the start of the second half.

On the evidence of the pre-season games against Swansea City and Bristol City there is no need to rush the return to action of Conor Grant because Mickel Miller has settled immediately into the side.

Argyle have used a 3-4-3 formation in those two matches and Miller has excelled in the wide left midfield role, showing a willingness to take on opposing defenders at pace and put in threatening crosses.
