Threave Rovers aim for title glory as new West of Scotland League season begins

Title glory is the main aim for Threave Rovers as they start the new season on Saturday.

The Castle Douglas side just missed out on back-to-back promotions last term when they finished fourth in the West of Scotland League’s third division.

And Danny Dunglinson, who has taken over as boss from caretaker gaffer Paul McGinley, isn’t hoping to just go one better by securing a top-three slot.

He said: “We’ve got to aim to win the league. Just going up isn’t something we want to aim for, we want to go up having won the league.

“With the players we’ve brought in, and how we’ve been looking pre-season, I’m pretty confident we can give it a good go. We’ve brought Alex Henderson back, who is the final piece we were looking for.

“Apart from Owen Bell, who’ll maybe be out until December or January, we’re fully fit.

“He’s waiting on an operation on his hip. There’s a waiting list but he’s had the letter to go in for his pre-op.

“We’re hoping that’s in the next couple of weeks which would maybe speed his recovery.”

Threave finished their pre-season preparations on Saturday with a fine 4-1 win over Renfrew at Meadow Park on Saturday.

Dunglinson added:
“Pre-season has gone really well. Results are irrelevant but
we’ve had some positive performances. Renfrew are in the first division. The first 10 minutes they were on top, but from 10 minutes in until the end we dominated.”

Threave start off the campaign in Castle Douglas this weekend, with Thorn Athletic from Johnstone coming to town.

Ahead of his competitive managerial debut, Dunglinson said: “It’ll be a tough game as they’ve just got promoted themselves.
