This has to be rock bottom for Rangers as the team is weak, fragile and leaderless - Barry Ferguson

I wasn't even angry on the final whistle on Thursday night – just sad and to be honest bewildered at the state my club finds itself in.

I’d just watched a Rangers team lose to bang average Cypriot opposition with a performance that frankly worries the life out of me. A team containing five players who played in the Europa League Final 18 months ago looked lost and fragile, rudderless, leaderless and totally shot of confidence. I went to bed worried about what I’d witnessed. When I woke up I put my player’s head on and thought, ‘I’m 45 with gubbed knees, but what would I do?’ Here’s what I’d do. I’d go to Steven Davis – and I feel sorry for my former team-mate because he has been landed with an almighty mess – and ask him and his coaching staff to give us, the players, an hour on our own in the dressing room.

I’d want a no-holds discussion with the squad and by that I don’t mean having anyone by the throat. I mean a proper grown up conversation, with me starting by saying: “I know I haven’t been good enough but I’m going to do something about it. I’m going to run harder.

“I’m getting closer to people. When the ball goes into our box, I’m going to win it or if I can’t I’m going to help out the defenders by getting on the second ball.

“I’m going to be a better team-mate.” Then the floor would be thrown open for anyone else to have their say. What’s gone wrong with their game? How can the rest of us help him make it better?

By the end of it there should be a shared sense of purpose and a determination that come hell or high water, Rangers are driving out of Paisley tomorrow with three points on the team bus. I know what’s coming from St Mirren. They will be smelling blood and in the first 10 minutes they will be launching
