The unknown 90s Rangers party paid for by Sir Alex revealed as icon told dressing room 'this one's on me'

Legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was so chuffed with Rangers beating Leeds he set up the Battle of Britain heroes with a night out for the ages.

The Manchester United boss made a beeline for the away dressing room at Elland Road back in 1992 after the Light Blues' 2-1 second leg victory secured a 4-2 aggregate win. That signature scalp dumped the reigning English league winners out of the Champions League in its maiden voyage. And Ferguson - 10 months away from his first title as United boss – was in jovial mood as his former team secured bragging rights. He headed inside the Rangers camp to congratulate old pal Walter Smith and his stars.

And Mark Hateley - speaking on the Quickly Kevin podcast – has revealed Sir Alex's delight led to Rangers stars earning a night out for the ages from Scottish football's ultimate icon. He said: "What a night that was, afterwards. Sir Alex Ferguson came straight into the dressing after the game and said 'well done, boys, the night is on me'. He booked a nightclub in Manchester, where we going back from, obviously leaving Leeds as quickly as we could. He said 'have a great time'."
