Sheffield Wednesday step up Will Vaulks pursuit as fears grow over Massimo Luongo's future

Sheffield Wednesday have stepped up their hunt for a new midfielder as it looks increasingly likely that Massimo Luongo will leave the club at the end of his current contract. The Australian international, a key figure in the middle of the park last season, is due to become a free agent come July 1.

Luongo was among four players offered fresh terms by the Owls following the climax of the 2021/22 campaign. But the 29-year-old, who moved to Hillsborough for an undisclosed fee nearly three years ago, has yet to put pen to paper.

Yorkshire Live understands Wednesday are currently scouring the market for potential midfield replacements for Luongo. Reports the Owls are in dialogue with Will Vaulks are accurate. The former Rotherham United man is heading for the exit door at Cardiff City.

Vaulks, who made 117 appearances in his three-year Bluebirds stint, scoring 11 goals, is to leave Cardiff City at the end of June following the expiry of his deal. Several Championship clubs, including Luton Town, Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers, have also been heavily linked with a move for Vaulks.

Yet it is believed Vaulks would be open to dropping back down into League One and joining the Owls if all parties can reach a suitable agreement. The 28-year-old featured 40 times across all competitions for the Bluebirds last term as they finished in the lower reaches of the second tier of English football.

Defensive midfield is a position Wednesday boss Darren Moore is keen to strengthen before next month's big kick-off. As things stand, Moore's midfield options consist of Barry Bannan, George Byers, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Dennis Adeniran and Alex Hunt.
