The perils of boasting a top boss as Rangers stare at the Ange effect just as Celtic suffered

Keeping hold of Philippe Clement for the long term will only see Rangers' trophy count increase, according to his former chairman at Genk.

This is a Rangers boss who has navigated the run in multiple times before in his homeland and while many will say that Glasgow is a different kettle of fish, success is success and the coaches who taste it repeatedly know the ingredients needed regardless of different international flavours.

But when you're making positive ripples, bigger fish will take notice. In an ideal Ibrox world, Clement leads Rangers to the title this year, and the next, and the next and the next before moving on even enters his head. But we know modern football doesn't work that way when the next rung on the ladder can be seen so easily from just over the border.

Legacy building on either side of Glasgow was perhaps the pinnacle for Scots bosses back in the day. But with the riches, profile and glamour down the road an omnipresent temptation for those who look like they could be on to a good long term thing, they are almost impossible to hold on to.
