Kilmarnock loan kid enjoys dream Albion Rovers debut with late winner

Albion Rovers new boy Aaron Quigg is celebrating after climbing off the bench to grab an 88th minute winner against Gretna on his debut.

The 18-year-old joined on loan from Kilmarnock last week and was thrown on late in Saturday’s Lowland League game at Cliftonhill, as Rovers searched for a winner.

And he duly delivered when he got on the end of Alex McCaw’s pass and drilled a low strike into the net for a 1-0 victory.

“It was some way to make my debut,” he told the club media.

“The boys played well for the full game. I was watching on in the first half and I was delighted to get on in the second half to score the goal.

“Alex does brilliantly down the left-hand side, beats a couple of players and then he picks me out at the edge of the box and I’ve managed to get my left foot on it to fire it into the bottom corner.

“Hopefully I can make my first start against Bo’ness next week, but it will be whatever the gaffer has in mind.

“I’d be happy just to play a part in it again. I hope the boys keep going, keep winning and keep the [seven-game] unbeaten run going.”

The home win over Gretna backed up an impressive 3-0 victory at Cliftonhill against Linlithgow Rose last midweek.

Bright Prince, Alan Reid and Niyah Joseph were all on target in that victory and the back-to-back wins this past week have taken Rovers into the top 10 in the table.

Rovers have three games in hand over most sides in the division and will set their sights on climbing even further this weekend at home to Bo’ness.
