The Manchester 'bullring' abattoir next to Co-op Live that's set to be demolished

Co-op Live is set to get some new neighbours as it’s been confirmed a housing estate could be built opposite.

New plans show developer Kellen Homes wants to demolish the Riverpark Trading Estate, an industrial park on Riverpark Road which is on the other side of Alan Turing Way to the 23,500-seat venue. After a troubled opening in spring, Co-op Live is now regularly welcoming in thousands of music and sports fans to the auditorium.

, including its cylindrical wholesale meat market — nicknamed ‘the bullring’.

“The works detailed in this plan relate to the complete demolition of all structures to slab level and the processing of all resultant materials for disposal [or] re-use on the new construction development by Kellen Homes,” a statement from demolition contractor Urban Regen said in confirming the site would be levelled.

Kellen is set to work with housing association Great Places to ‘bring forward a mixed tenure’ housing development, but Kellen did not reveal any more details of what is in the works when asked by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

A spokesperson said: “Kellen Homes has in conjunction with Great Places Housing Group secured the land at Riverpark in Manchester to bring forward a mixed tenure development as part of a continued and highly successful partnership. We will now be working closely with Manchester City Council’s planning and development team to develop a masterplan to help us deliver quality homes for local people.”
