The ‘fabulous’ zoo 45 minutes from Manchester named amongst some of the UK's best

A zoo just 45 minutes from Manchester hailed a ‘fabulous’ and ‘fantastic’ family day out by Tripadviser reviewers has now been named one of the best in the UK.

Chester Zoo, which is home to more than 37,000 animals and 128 acres of gardens, has been ranked the third best zoo in the UK just in time for the Easter holidays.

The zoo located near to the M56 and Chester city centre scooped third place with Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire taking the top spot and Paignton Zoo in Devon coming in second.

Chester was not the only North West zoo to make the top ten with Blackpool Zoo named the eighth best in the UK.

The zoos were ranked by researchers at Outdoor Toys who analysed admission prices, reviews, search volumes and number of available species for zoos across the country to reveal which are the best.

Chester Zoo scored 7.12 out of 10 with 500 species (the higest number out of any zoo in the top ten list), a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5, ticket prices for older children at £21.81, a free car park and a 1,702% increase in Google searches over the last 12 months

The zoo first opened in 1931 and is now one of the UK’s largest zoos (at 51 hectares). In 2019 Chester Zoo took the top spot as the UK’s most visited in 2019. Last week two snow leopards arrived at the zoo ahead of the opening of a huge new Himalayan habitat for the species.

Cotswold Wildlife Park scored 8.05 out 10 with older children’s tickets costing just £13.50. The zoo has fewer species than Chester with 260 different species on site and has a matching 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor.

Tickets for older children to the runner-up Paignton Zoo cost £16.85 which also has a 4.5-star
