Manchester Marathon 2024: All the road closures as thousands of runners take to the streets

Thousands of people will take to the streets this weekend for the Manchester Marathon 2024. Considered the UK's second largest marathon, the event draws in people from all over the world as they try to achieve a personal best and raise money for charities and organisations close to their hearts.

Last year’s event was attended by more than 24,000 people, with close to £2m being raised for charity. This year, the main event will begin on Sunday morning (April 14), with phased start times beginning from 8.55am.

Like in previous years, the start and finish lines will be in Old Trafford as runners make their way around the 26.2 mile route (which we’ve outlined here) including the city centre, Chorlton, Altrincham, Hulme, Stretford and other parts of Trafford. Travel warnings have been put in place, with people advised to travel to the event via Metrolink where possible.

A number of road closures will be in place during the event. Some of these, especially alongside the start and finish lines, will close prior to the event taking place and will remain closed until the last runners have completed the route.

As always, it’s always advised to plan ahead and find alternative means of transport if you are planning on going out and about whilst the race is on. Of course, if you want to cheer the participants on, there will be plenty of spots along the entire route where you can show your support.

On Sunday, the majority of road closures will be in place from 3am to 8pm, but there are a small number of roads - based within the start and finish lines - that will be closed from Saturday morning. The full closure timings will vary based on location.
