The clumsiest tackle? Peter Crouch on John Obi Mikel during Liverpool vs Chelsea

Peter Crouch is a Premier League legend in his own right.

The gangly striker was far from the most aesthetically-pleasing footballer going, but he was very effective.

You don’t get to play for the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team if you aren’t good at your job.

And Crouch certainly was. He finished his club career with 197 goals and 75 assists, while he found the back of the net an impressive 22 times in just 42 outings on the international stage.

But while the 41-year-old was pretty good at beating opposing goalkeepers, he struggled with other aspects of the game – tackling in particular.

When you’re over two metres tall with a striker’s brain, defending is never going to be easy and Crouch was guilty of some dreadfully clumsy tackles in his playing days.

The worst of them came against Chelsea during the quarter-finals of the League Cup in 2007.

Crouch’s two-footed lunge on John Obi Mikel at Stamford Bridge saw him deservedly red carded. However, it’s quite hard not to laugh at footage of the tackle to be honest.

You’ve got to hand it to Crouch for making a reckless two-footed tackle look like something out of a comedy movie.

The way he virtually sat down in mid-air with his long legs all over the place is just too funny and it’s made all the better by the fact that the former Chelsea man avoided picking up an injury as a result of the challenge.

After the game, Crouch actually called out the Nigerian midfielder for what he believed was a theatrical reaction, despite the fact the striker also said there were “no excuses” for the tackle.
