St James' Park transfer news: Journalist says Bruno Guimaraes has taken a 'risk' signing for Newcastle

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook reckons that Newcastle have signed a player who has got everything you need to be a modern day defensive midfielder in Bruno Guimaraes.

The 24-year-old was Newcastle’s marquee signing of the January window when he made the £35m move from Lyon.

Following their takeover, January was always shaping up to be a potential season-defining month for the club.

Eddie Howe made early inroads by adding Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to his squad in the early days, but it was clear that Newcastle were hoping to make a big-name signing to seriously boost their hopes of staying in the Premier League.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Trippier was a statement signing and this was even more so. People I speak to in Europe tell me he’s a terrific player. He’s got all of the attributes you need to be a modern day defensive midfielder, he’s a Brazilian international, it’s a World Cup year, he’s willing to make the change, and the risk of playing in the Championship next season says a lot.

“I think it’s a great signing for Newcastle, I really do.”
