Tesco issue 'do not consume' recall on popular English dessert

Consumer giant Unilever is recalling a food product that was synonymous with luxury in the 1980s, after it was mislabeled in Spanish. The product will now have to be taken off the shelves in affected supermarkets.

The withdrawn item, Viennetta Vanilla, which was originally sold with the slogan "one slice is never enough", is being taken out of the chest freezers at Tesco stores across the UK after milk and soya were listed on the label in Spanish, rather than the Viennetta's native language.

Somewhat of a cultural fad, Viennetta was first created in Gloucester in 1982 at the Walls ice cream factory and is renowned for its iconic concertina shape. But if you have a tub of Viennetta Vanilla with "leche" or "soja" on the label, the Food Standards Agency is urging you to get in touch with Unilever and not consume the product.

The affected labels, which read "Viennetta Vanilla" on the product packaging, are only for the 650ml version, but if you have one of these sat in your freezer, Unilever are urging you to get in touch and not consume the Viennetta.

In their recall notice, Unilever state: "In the UK we are recalling a limited number of Viennetta Vanilla 650ml as a precaution following a labelling error which means product information, including ingredients and allergens (milk and may contain soy), are in Spanish rather than English.

"The products and ingredients are the same as the UK product and it is only a limited number of Viennetta Vanilla 650ml that use the incorrect Spanish label. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your co operation."
