Three ways Erik ten Hag can set up Man United's defence vs Liverpool amid Raphael Varane dilemma

Manchester United have been dealt a major injury boost ahead of their clash against Liverpool this weekend. The Red Devils will welcome Jurgen Klopp's side to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as they hope to return to winning ways.

Erik ten Hag's side head into the clash following a heart-breaking defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening, meanwhile, Liverpool enjoyed a 3-1 win over Sheffield United at Anfield. With Arsenal and Manchester City snapping at the Reds' heels in the title race, they'll be desperate to secure all three points.

Klopp could very well throw the kitchen sink at Manchester United this weekend – especially with Ten Hag being short on options at the back. Raphael Varane picked up a knock in west London and he was substituted at half-time for the second game in a row.

The former Real Madrid defender was replaced by Jonny Evans, who could only manage a 21-minute cameo before Willy Kambwala was given the nod. Casemiro was also brought off in the final quarter of an hour.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Ten Hag said: "That doesn't help in such moments if you have to manage the game, [it helps] that there are leaders on the pitch. Also Casemiro we have to take off. That doesn't help.

"They know how to deal [with pressure] and how to bring the win over the line. I can't tell now what it is in prospect of Sunday but we have to take them both off. In this moment, I don't know [if Varane can play Liverpool]. I can't help.
