Tenerife police searching for missing British teen Jay Slater issue statement

Spanish police have said they are 'doing everything possible' to find a British teenager who has gone missing in Tenerife.

Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, is currently missing on the Spanish island after travelling there for a music festival and holiday with pals. The 19-year-old's family and friends have not heard from him since yesterday morning (June 17).

A desperate search is underway to find him near the village of Masca, in the Parque Rural de Teno. You can follow live updates on the search here.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard in Tenerife has now said that emergency crews are doing 'everything possible' to trace the teenager. A police helicopter is being used over the mountainous area, which is popular with hikers. Firefighters and mountain rescuers are also involved in the desperate search.

The Civil Guard spokesperson said: "A specialist Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group called the Greim have been mobilised. A police helicopter is also out and focusing on the area around the village of Masca.

"Other emergency services including firefighters have also been mobilised. Everything possible is being done to try to find the missing man."

A spokesperson for a regional emergency co-ordination centre in Tenerife added that drones are also being used in the search, which has been ongoing since yesterday, into the night and throughout today. The spokesperson said: "The Civil Guard are coordinating this operation because they’re responsible for investigations involving missing people.

"We’re acting as support to them and they’re the ones who are asking for more resources as and when they feel
