Team Mouat and Team Grandy crowned Mercure Perth Masters curling champions

Olympic silver medallists Team Mouat lifted a fourth successive Mercure Perth Masters title in front of a packed Dewars Centre crowd on Sunday.

An enthralling battle with Team Whyte - whose ranks include Robin Brydone and Duncan McFadzean of Perth - went all the way to an extra end, played out on first-class ice.

It was the squad of Bruce Mouat, Bobby Lammie, Grant Hardie and Hammy McMillan who celebrated clinching a 4-3 triumph.

“It was not plain sailing but we did enough to win the event and had a really good day,” Mouat said.

“We played really well in the last three games. In all of them we played to a pretty high standard and that is what you need to do on a play-off day and I was glad to get that one over the line.

“We played some really nice shots there to put Ross [Whyte] and the boys under pressure and we got the result in the end.”

Mouat went on to add: “It’s always exciting to win. It’s what we play for and what we train for and Perth has so much history behind it.

“We used to come and watch this event when we were a lot younger and we watched all the big Canadian teams come over to compete.

“It is always a pleasure to play at Perth and they have run the event really well.”

A bumper crowd from the above gallery - almost 1000 tuned in online too - also watched as Team Grandy of Canada played their way to the women’s title.

They defeated reigning Scottish senior champions Team Lockhart - Jackie Lockhart as well as Perth’s Mairi Milne, Katie Loudon and Wendy Johnston - 8-3 in the showdown.

“It is huge for us,” said winning skip Clancy Grandy. “We had a really tough start to the season, had an injury on our team and were doing a lot of technical changes.

“A lot of work was being put in and it can be hard to stay
