'Taking the p***' - Man United hero Paul Scholes fumes after seeing Old Trafford stands at Soccer Aid

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was jokingly less than impressed to see Old Trafford decked out in blue and white flags for Sunday’s Soccer Aid match.

The midfielder scored one of England’s goals in the 4-2 loss to the World XI but before kick-off he raised an eyebrow when he looked to the stands. The celebrity exhibition match raises money for UNICEF each year with £14.6million donated this time around.

In an unlucky coincidence, the charity’s colours are blue and white, somewhat resembling Manchester City’s shades. This stuck out to Scholes, especially less than 24 hours after the Blues had lifted the Champions League to equal his 1999 United side’s Treble feat.

Posting on his Instagram story, he shared a photo of the flags held by the crowd, adding a tongue-in-cheek caption: ‘Somebody had got to be taking the p*** with these flags!!’ The sight of the World XI later lifting the Soccer Aid trophy won’t have helped his mood either.

Scholes came on for 12 second-half minutes, lashing home his strike past UFC star Leon Edwards not long after the break. However, the 48-year-old had to be replaced shortly after as he pulled up with an injury.

Fellow former United teammates Gary Neville and Nicky Butt joined Scholes on the England team while ex-Old Trafford stars Patrice Evra and Nani starred for the World XI.
