Swansea hierarchy turned down deadline day transfer for Wolves player

Swansea City had the chance to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers’ left-sided player Ryan Giles on transfer deadline day – only for the club’s American owners to turn down the deal, according to Wales Online.

The 21-year-old instead joined high-flying Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season on a loan deal, with the Swans instead capturing Shrewsbury Town left back Nathanael Ogbeta on a permanent contract.

Swansea were linked earlier in the window with a move for Giles, who had spent the first half of the season on loan at their bitter rivals Cardiff City and had notched nine assists.

But it was thought due to his spell with the Bluebirds, Swansea wouldn’t be in a favourable position to get a deal done despite needing a wing back to replace Jake Bidwell.

Wolves ended up recalling Giles at the start of January due to squad depth issues but opted by the end of the month to send him back out on loan, however presented with the chance to add him to their squad, Swansea’s owners across the Atlantic Ocean vetoed the deal.

The Verdict

Giles would have been a fantastic addition to most squads this month, so Swansea fans will be gutted that he wasn’t acquired by their owners.

That is despite his brief links to Cardiff, who he played very well for in the final months of 2021 before heading back to his parent club.

Blackburn have landed a real coup with that one but it wasn’t all bad news for the Swans after their capture of Ogbeta.

With a Man City academy pedigree, Ogbeta is talented but perhaps doesn’t have that crossing ability yet that Giles possesses so he’s a work in progress – Russell Martin though may be frustrated after the hierarchy not only turned down the opportunity to sign Giles but also Ryan Longman from Brighton.
