Street taped off in city centre after cladding falls from building during Storm Debi

Part of Manchester city centre has been cordoned off after cladding fell from a building. Firefighters are currently in attendance on Watson Street following the incident this afternoon (November 13).

Emergency services were called out to the scene at around 3pm. The fire service has taped off an area of Watson Street to protect members of the public.

It's understood the cladding came from the Great Northern Tower. It comes as Storm Debi has brought strong winds to Manchester, causing disruption on the region's roads.

There is currently heavy traffic on surrounding streets, including Peter Street and Deansgate. A GMFRS spokesperson said: "At just before 3pm today (Monday, November 13) one fire engine from Moss Side fire station was called to Watson Street in Manchester city centre after a piece of cladding fell from a building onto the pavement below.

"A cordon has been put in place with road closures in place to keep the area safe. Crews remain in attendance.” Manchester City Council has been approached for further information.
