Fire crews descend on north Manchester street after chemical spillage at school

Fire crews descended on a north Manchester street following a chemical spillage at a school. Emergency services were called out to Nuthurst Road, in Moston, at around 1pm today (November 13).

It followed a chemical spillage at the science department of St Matthews RC High School, the Manchester Evening News understands. A large fire service response scrambled to the school.

Specialist teams for hazardous materials and environmental protection joined firefighters at the scene. Crews worked for a number of hours to make the area safe.

Firefighters had left the scene by 6.10pm. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At approximately 1pm on Monday, November 13, two fire engines from Gorton Fire Station, Hazardous Material Officers and the Environmental Protection Unit from GMFRS attended an incident involving a chemical spillage in a commercial premises on Nuthurst Road, Manchester.

"Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, gauntlets and overdrums to make the scene safe.” St Matthews RC High School has been approached for comment.
