Steven MacLean fumes at St Johnstone flops as he warns stars to 'watch themselves' after Stirling Albion shocker

Steven MacLean fumed at his St Johnstone flops after a stunning 4-0 home loss to Stirling Albion.

Saints, already out the Viaplay Cup, capitulated to the League One side. Macca insisted it was an ‘eye-opener’ for him ahead of the Premiership start at home to Hearts next week. He held a lengthy dressing room inquest then blasted the quality of performance against the Binos - and commitment levels. MacLean stressed: “It was totally unacceptable from a team of mine.

“Okay, I had players unavailable, we were already out the competition but it’s still not acceptable. I take full responsibility, it’s my team. The stick lies with me and I am all in for them. I will give them everything I’ve got and I expect the same in return. I don’t think I’ve had everything in return from them. I need a reaction. We’ve had a chat about it, they know my feelings. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

“There’s a lot at the root of it. We had enough good players there to go and win the game.

“It’s simply not good enough. We lost poor goals and we don’t do enough to score. We were poor all round - poor passing, poor energy levels and poor commitment.”

MacLean hinted that he’d lost patience with some of his first team stars. He said: “I think I know who’s ready and who’s not. And I think I know who’s good enough and who is not - senior players and young players.

“It’s been an eye opener for me. Some people probably need to watch themselves.

“No one can say they’ve not had a chance. But they’ve shown they’ve not done well enough.

“We still need players in, I knew that, we need them in quickly. It’s not great. Hopefully we can turn it around.”
