Alan Shearer gives three-word verdict on Man City star Erling Haaland after goals vs Burnley

Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer described Manchester City star Erling Haaland as 'deadly' after he scored twice in Friday night's 3-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

City made the perfect start to their Premier League title defence, making light work of the newly-promoted Clarets, inspired by Haaland's first-half double. He put the Blues ahead after just four minutes, turning the ball home from close range after meeting Rodri's header back across goal.

He added to his tally later in the half, bending home a superb finish via the crossbar to put City firmly in charge by the half-time interval. It marked the second season in a row that he has netted a Premier League opening-day brace.

Rodri, who was excellent in midfield, added City's third of the night with just 15 minutes of normal time remaining, but it was Haaland, who was involved in a half-time spat with manager Pep Guardiola, who stole the show.

He plundered 52 goals in his first season at the Etihad Stadium and it would be no great surprise to see him hit a similar number this term. He has 38 goals in just 36 Premier League appearances.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer's Premier League goalscoring record is safe for now following Harry Kane's admission that he is leaving Tottenham this summer, but Haaland could be the latest threat to Shearer's record should he stay at City for the majority of his career.

Even if that does prove to be the case in years to come, Shearer is unlikely to begrudge the Norwegian, waxing lyrical about him after his opening night brace.
