Steven Gerrard savages key figure in Liverpool, Aston Villa clash – ‘I hope it’s looked at’

Steven Gerrard made a cutting retirement comment about referee Jon Moss who courted controversy during Aston Villa’s defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Neither Villa nor Liverpool appeared happy with the refereeing display dished out by Moss on Tuesday night. The veteran referee made a series of questionable calls and failed to produce a single yellow card despite the combative nature of the contest.

The home crowd became increasingly frustrated at what they believed were decisions going in the Reds’ favour.

Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, was left baffled at how his side were able to concede a goal that was offside in the build-up in the age of VAR.

Ultimately, Liverpool’s 2-1 victory tempered Klopp’s anger to a degree. The same, however, could not be said for Gerrard.

Speaking in the aftermath, the Villa boss was asked about the performance of referee Moss.

Initially, Gerrard attempted to keep his composure with a standard “no comment” reply. However, he could not hold his tongue for long.

“No comment, I just hope that it’s looked at,” said Gerrard (via the Liverpool Echo). “That’s all I say. I hope it’s looked at.

“Have I gone to talk to Jon Moss? No. I just hope his performance is looked at.

“I don’t want to be sour, Liverpool scored two goals against us and we need to look at that and I don’t want to cover over any cracks.”

When informed that Moss will be hanging up his whistle and retiring when the season ends, Gerrard brutally replied: “Is he? Good.”

Gerrard can yet do Liverpool a favour in their title quest when Villa travel to the Etihad on final day.
