St Mirren 1, Motherwell 0: Saints go marching as Well crash out of Viaplay Cup

Motherwell were sent crashing out of the Viaplay Cup last 16 as St Mirren ran out narrow winners in Paisley.

Caolan Boyd-Munce's rocket strike early in the game was enough to send the Buddies into tomorrow afternoon's quarter-final draw.

It was no more than the hosts deserved; while Motherwell had plenty of flurries up front they didn't do enough with it, and only Theo Bair forced a save from Zach Hemming.

Saints on the other hand had loads of possession but didn't do too much with it, though Liam Kelly was called in to more action than his Saints counterpart.

Caolan Boyd-Munce opened the scoring for St Mirren with a rocket shot after eight minutes, which was quite a way to score his first goal for the club.

It was deserved for St Mirren, who had the better of what few chances there were, with Keanu Baccus twice going close.

Motherwell came back into the game in 33 minutes when Blair Spittal went on a run down the left and forced a corner, but they never forced Zach Hemming into a meaningful save.

In the second half Theo Bair forced a tremendous save from Hemming, but other than that the visitors didn't offer much, while Saints hit on the counter-attack without much bite.

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson kept faith with the side that beat Dundee 2-1 here last weekend.

Motherwell gaffer Stuart Kettlewell made two changes to the line-up that beat Hibs by the same score-line at Fir Park on Sunday, with Shane Blaney and Davor Zdravkovski coming in for Pape Souare and Lennon Miller, the latter of whom was on the bench.
